Region 10 and the Office of Research and Development of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will present the Air Quality and Climate Change Conference on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. The conference will be available via videoconferencing at sites in Portland, Oregon; Anchorage, Alaska; Juneau, Alaska; Spokane, Washington; and Boise, Idaho. This conference is open to State, Local, and Tribal Air Partners and Regulators and others as space permits.

This conference will share the latest information on the projected effects of climate change on air quality in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska and air quality/greenhouse gases (GHGs) or climate change linkages. It will also showcase examples of and discuss tools for and challenges to controlling GHGs while controlling criteria pollutants and air toxics in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Join us in person at the main venue in Seattle or participate remotely in Portland, Boise, Spokane, Juneau, or Anchorage to:

  • Hear about the latest science on how climate change will affect regional air quality and participate in discussions on how States, Tribes, and locals may use this information to adapt to climate change. Topics will include ozone, particulate matter (PM)/fire, and toxics.

  • Learn the latest on coeffects of controlling GHGs on criteria pollutants and toxics and conversely what is known about the coeffects of controlling air toxics or criteria pollutants on GHGs. For example:

    1. How does black carbon, including soot on snow, affect climate change?
    2. How does control of aerosols affect climate change?
    3. How does control of ozone affect climate change?
    4. What effects does a switch to biofuels (wood/ethanol/biodiesel) have on criteria pollutant emissions?
    5. How do traditional control measures, particularly point source controls for PM, ozone and precursors, and air toxics affect energy use/climate change?

  • Participate in discussions on State, local, and Tribal experiences and current/future challenges with multipollutant planning.

  • Hear about the most up-to-date and readily available air emissions planning and accounting tools that integrate an analysis of climate change impacts to air quality and identify gaps in available analytical tools.

  • Get updates on recent Federal and regional climate policy developments.
